Summary of WHSEC meeting
November 19 – 20, 2010
Hyatt Regency, Vancouver
WHSEC is a gathering of the Workplace, Health, Safety & Environment committees that represent BC colleges and universities that are members of FPSE.
The meeting on Friday evening began with a review of the minutes from the previous meeting (January 29 – 30, 2010) and of follow-up actions. We also heard reports from the following members:
1) FPSE executive liaison, Nanci Lucas
2) representative of non-regular faculty members, Brian Harvey
3) BC Federation of Labour staff member, Zoe Towle, and
4) WCB.
In the morning of the following day, we heard a workshop called “Understanding & Preventing Stress in the Workplace,” given by a representative of WCB. The workshop presented various definitions of “stress” and introduced studies about the effects and costs of workplace stress.
After the workshop, the committee reviewed the reports that had been submitted by each local. It also presented the findings of the CAUT study (“Occupational Stress in FPSE Members”) published in March 2010. These findings are based on the questionnaires completed by FPSE members who had chosen to participate.
It was recommended that this report of Occupational Stress in FPSE Members be made available to the JOHS of each local.
